What Exactly is Perioperative Nursing?

Perioperative Nursing is focused upon the perioperative experience, which plays a vital role in the lives of individual patients, families, nurses and additional members of the health care team.

Nurses themselves are registered nurses (RNs) that have had at least one years previous experience in a health care field. PNs (Perioperative Nurses for short) must graduate a one year course to earn their Perioperative degree. This is a must to work in most surgical departments across North America and some parts of the EU (European Union). This one year degree (or masters) helps PN's earn as much as - more per hour, with more specialized and focused labour.

Perioperative nurses roles and responsibilities include supporting the health care needs of clients. At the same time PN's work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This team includes but is not exclusive to additional medical practitioners such as anesthesiologists, doctors, specialist doctors, nurses aides & personal support workers and surgical doctors, amongst others.

Each step is examined, right from the start of, including pre-surgical prep all the way up to post-surgical care. The PN's standards require them to lay down the health care groundwork, technological knowhow and the expertise to help each individual patients needs & wants.

At the end of the day the PN's main goal & purpose is to supply top notch personal care to patients, supporting their well-being, safety, comfort and overall health for patients about to undergo anesthesia and upcoming operations. The nurses lend a human touch to a sometimes seemingly sterile environment.
