When Aion Online hits the store shelves in a week, it brings with it one of the more interesting sets of classes in an MMO yet and one of the most intriguing of those classes is the Chanter - a character that is a big of a healer/melee hybrid with a big staff and a whole lot of group buffs that make them incredibly important for a group in the Abyss.

Built out of the Priest Class, Chanters are one of the only classes with healing abilities, immediately making them very important for many groups and for any player who enjoys playing a healer. However, unlike clerics who are focused on spells alone, Chanters are fighters and do so with their staffs, hitting with multiple combos in the field. They wear chain armor and have a staff or shield and mace. Their damage output isn't quite on par with the DPS classes, but their utility in a group is second to none as their Mantras enhance the entire party's ability to combat their foes.

The key to the damage dealt by a Chanter is that they can hit with not only damage dealing attacks (albeit, weaker ones), but they can debuff their opponents in many ways, reducing movement speed, attack rate, defense, and flight speed. Additionally, a staff will make it possible to knock your enemy to the ground.

Of course, those offensive abilities are all back seat to the support role that a good Chanter will play in most groups. They can buff almost every class, including melee and caster damage, magical and physical defense, and run speed. Mantras are also useful because they will allow players to benefit while in a certain radius of the Chanter.

Finally, there are the healing spells which include both Direct heals and HoTs. The direct heals are not quite as strong as the Cleric heals, but they make strong backup healers by using their HoTs to support a group in many ways.

A good Chanter is one of the most effective and useful members of a group. If you're building a guild or just like to play a dynamic healing, support class, this is one class you should keep in mind.
