Obtaining Your CNA As a Stepping Stone to Becoming a Registered Nurse

Obtaining your Nursing Assistant certification allows you to obtain work as a nurse's aide in the medical field. Many who choose to work in this field, find that they enjoy the ability to help other people in a time of need. They are generally caring and compassionate people my nature, who are excellent communications. Also, many find that obtaining their CNA and working in the medical field, is an excellent starting point to obtaining their licensed registered nurse degree.

While a traditional Nursing degree or certification can take at least two years, it's possible to obtain a CNA in as little as two weeks. Thus, many individuals who are unsure if the nursing field is right for them choose to obtain their CNA and work in the medical field prior to starting a lengthy and expensive nursing degree program. It's much easier to decide that you do not like an occupation or choose to go into another field, if you have only given up at most twelve weeks of schooling compared to the 2-4 years it takes to obtain your Registered Nurse (RN) degree.

Additionally many hospitals and medical employers will offer a multitude of options to assist you in gaining your RN degree. Some employers will cover a percentage of your tuition, while others will pay a maximum dollar amount each year. Though whichever path you choose, it's important to realize that in many cases you have to continue to work at the employer for a period of time after obtaining your degree. In the event that you quit, you may be required to pay back a certain percentage of the tuition they had covered.

Another advantage to obtaining your CNA prior to becoming a fully licensed RN is you will have a lot of experience already in the field. Also, when it comes to graduation you will not be faced with the sometimes difficult task of find a job. In most cases the medical facility that you already work at will have openings they need to have filled and you will be offered a promotion.
